Hilton Munich City, Review

To my surprise, Munich has relatively few chain properties for a European city of its size and importance.  As a Hilton loyalist, the Hilton Munich City seemed like the obvious choice and overall my stay was pretty good.

Location

The Hilton Munich City is located within walking distance of Munich’s old town and only two metro stops from Marienplatz.  Just below the hotel is Rosenheimer Platz metro station, giving you a direct link to the airport and many areas across Munich.  I was very happy with this location as we took the metro just about everywhere.

Check In

I arrived at the hotel around 10am which is a bit early for check in, though I figured I would be able to get the room key immediately being a diamond member.  To my surprise, I was told the hotel was full and I couldn’t check in until mid afternoon.  Only when I asked about a suite upgrade was I told I could have the suite and check in immediately.  Not so happy that they were going to make me wait several hours before offering an upgrade to a diamond member..  This was not my first experience at a German Hilton hotel where the front desk staff are reluctant to give upgrades.

At least the hotel lobby was very well furnished and certainly felt like a five star hotel lobby.

The Room

Our junior suite (room 2024) was located on the 2nd floor and faced the inner courtyard of the hotel, not a very interesting view.  There is a small square shaped entrance with a small table, closets, and a door leading to the bathroom.

Straight ahead was the living room with a large and comfortable couch, coffee table, TV, and a dining table with seating for four.

The living room has a large window with views out to the inner courtyard. We kept the window blinds shut the entire stay..

The bedroom was small and simple with a comfortable double bed with night tables on either side, as well as a desk and TV.  A pair of sliding doors separate the bedroom from the bathroom.

The bathroom is quite large with double sinks, and a separate area with a shower, bathtub and toilet. The shower had a rain shower head, and while I normally love these, this one wasn’t great.  I really didn’t like the bathroom design as it would have made more sense to separate the toilet from the shower and bathtub, but overall it didn’t bother me too much.

Breakfast

The Hilton Munich City serves a pretty standard breakfast by European standards.  They have several hot meat and vegetarian dishes as well as fruit, bread, pastries, yogurt, cheese, fish and Bavarian pretzels.

The drinks selection was quite poor with only bottled orange juice which was bitter and limited coffee options.

I only found out my second day that they offer pancakes and omelets at breakfast if you make a special request, however this is not advertised.

The quality of the food was mostly good.  I especially enjoyed the fruit and Bavarian pretzels.

I thought the restaurant where breakfast was served felt more like an elementary school cafeteria than a five star hotel.. Not elegant at all for a hotel that otherwise had great decor.

Breakfast at the lounge, while in a smaller and less crowded space, was not any better.

The food and drink options were very limited and while there is a coffee machine, I didn’t like the taste at all.  There may have been options to order omelets and other food from the kitchen, though no one was working at the lounge when I came.

Nevertheless, we made due with the options offered and I found tasty options each morning to satisfy my hunger.

Hotel Amenities

Unfortunately, the Hilton Munich City doesn’t have a swimming pool or sauna, although there is a decently equipped gym located in the lobby just behind reception.  What an odd place to put a gym right?!

The executive lounge on the 5th floor is open 6am – 10pm and serves breakfast in the morning, snacks throughout the day, and a light dinner and drinks in the evenings.  I found the options in the lounge to be boring and mainly used the lounge to grab a coffee or other drinks throughout the day.  The cocktail hour could be a replacement for dinner, however the food quality was among the lowest I’ve seen at any European Hilton hotel lounge.

Bottom Line

While I wasn’t so impressed with the Hilton’s amenities, lounge, or service, I did like the room and location very much.  With a lack of better options in Munich, I would likely stay here again though I’m not terribly enthusiastic about this property.
