Flying first class with Lufthansa is always a treat, though this flight was especially good thanks to the two other first class passengers missing the flight. As a result, I had the entire first class cabin to myself!

Boarding

All Lufthansa first class passengers can use the First Class Terminal in Frankfurt, a lounge which functions as its own airport terminal with check in, security, and passport control in the building.

From the first class terminal, the only way to the plane is via a Porsche transfer across the tarmac which is one of the best first class perks offered by any airline! When it was time to board, I was escorted down one level where my boarding pass was checked, my bags were loaded into the car, and I was driven to the plane.

When we arrived at my gate we took an elevator up to the main terminal where I was escorted past the line of passengers directly onto the plane.

Once at my seat, I was greeted by the two crew members in charge of first class as well as several others who came to welcome me onboard, all so friendly!  I was offered some champagne, food and drink menus, amenity kit, Bose headphones, as well as some extremely comfortable pajamas which I still wear daily (seriously, I love those pajamas so much that I will bring them when I fly first class on other airlines).

I was told that two other passengers who were booked in first class weren’t going to make the flight, so I would have the entire cabin to myself.  As if I wasn’t enjoying myself enough already, before takeoff the captain came down for a quick chat and even invited me up to the cockpit after takeoff (I promised not to post any pictures).  We were off to a great start!

Cabin and Seat

The first class cabin on Lufthansa’s 747 has just 8 seats at the nose of the aircraft: three seats along either side and two in the center of the cabin, ideal for a couple traveling together.

The cabin feels elegant with nice finishes, a rose at every seat, and the bar in the middle of the cabin.  I selected seat 1K, on the right side of the aircraft.  It feels so cool to be in the nose of the plane and you’ll have the most privacy in this seat (though that wasn’t my concern since I was the only passenger) as no one walks by you to go to the toilet.

The seat itself is quite comfortable with plenty of storage, seat adjustment features, large entertainment screen, and the signature Lufthansa red rose at each seat. Each seat can turn into a fairly wide, fully flat bed and has a privacy partition which can be raised after takeoff.

While the seats are of course nice, they can’t compete with many airlines that offer enclosed suites in first class.

First Class Amenities

As I mentioned before, all first class passengers are given pajamas and amenity kits just after boarding.  In addition, all first class passengers receive free wifi for the entire flight which would otherwise cost about 30 Euro.  Being the only first class passenger, I was given phenomenal service throughout the flight including an informal German lesson and invitation to the cockpit mid-flight.

Food

While I guess I forgot to take pictures of the menu (I was just having so much fun), the food I ate on this flight was very good.  This was an early afternoon departure, so lunch was served after takeoff followed by a light dinner before landing.  I began lunch with a large serving of caviar followed by some balik salmon, both of which were very tasty.

For the main course I had the seabass with some gnocchi and spinach which was just fine.  I was so full after all the food I had eaten in the lounge and on the plane that I had to skip dessert this time and decided to take a rest.

I ordered dinner about two hours before landing.  Again I started with a large serving of caviar followed by a soup and a hamburger.

Again while the starters were delicious, the burger wasn’t very good and I was finished after a couple bites.  Once again, rather than having dessert I went for a wine tasting and tried all the red wines onboard which were all quite nice.

Upon arrival in Bangalore, I had two guys waiting for me who had already printed my boarding pass on my next flight to Sri Lanka and escorted me to through security to my next flight.

Bottom Line

Lufthansa first class is always an incredible experience whether the cabin is full or empty (although I obviously prefer it to be empty)!  Every part of the experience from the moment you step into the first class terminal until you arrive at your destination is perfectly executed and incredible to experience.  The only area where Lufthansa lags behind its competition are the seats.  So many airlines now have closing doors or even full suites in first class while Lufthansa hasn’t had a major seat upgrade in years.  Regardless, I can’t wait for my next opportunity to fly Lufthansa first class again!
