ZACHARY DAVIDSON

Thai Airways 747 First Class, Bangkok to Sydney

Flight Number TG 475

Seat 1A

Departing from Bangkok at 19:20

Another older review, in fact this was the first flight I ever took in first class and a very special one. Thai Airways offers among the best first class products in the world with incredible service both at the airport and onboard.

Check In

Thai Airway first class passengers can use the dedicated first class check in area at the far left side of the departures hall. While most passengers stand in line in the loud and crowded main hall, you can sit and relax with some cold water while the friendly Thai Airways staff checks you in.

Once you have your boarding pass, you are then guided through security and passport control and down one level where a buggy is waiting to take you to the first class lounge.

The lounge review will be in a separate post, but it was fantastic and easily worth arriving early to the airport to enjoy the full body massage and dining.

Boarding

I was escorted from the lounge to the boarding gate where I was able to completely bypass the massive crowd of people waiting and head directly onto the plane.

I was greeted at the airplane door by the purser and shown to my seat at the nose of the 747, 1A.

Cabin and Seat

Thai’s 747 first class cabin consists of 9 suites.  Three individual suites on either side of the cabin, a pair of seats at the back, and a single suite in the center which is the least private and likely always the last to be selected.

While the individual suites were beautifully designed, the cabin itself is pretty standard with few customized features for Thai Airways, not even a logo or artwork at the back.

Each suite features an adjustable seat with a tablet controller, closet, large IFE screen, and a wooden surface along the window which has various storage compartments and holds the dining table inside.

While the suites don’t have doors, there is a privacy partition which offers a fair amount of privacy.

Each suite has fresh orchids just beside the IFE screen which were a nice touch!

Food and Drink

After a long day, eating tons of food in the city and at the lounge, I wasn’t sure how much I could really eat on board, though I was determined to sample as much of the menu as possible.

The menu read as follows:

After takeoff, I had a glass of white wine accompanied by some hazelnuts and prawn mousse “lollipops (?)” which I didn’t particularly enjoy.

Dinner service began about 20 minutes later. My table was set and I was offered a bread basket as well as garlic bread which was fresh out of the oven.

I started the meal with caviar which was beautifully presented and such a joy to eat.

Next was crab thermidor which I didn’t really care for either.

Next was a pea soup which looked and tasted great.

For my main dish I had the beef curry, which was nicely presented and tasted great, though I could only have a couple bites before my stomach informed me it was too full.

Dessert options were limited, though the crew insisted I at least have some fruit and cheese which I nibbled on.

Overall a very nice multi course meal with the caviar and beef curry being the highlights for me.

Breakfast was served about 90 minutes before landing. I woke up to a warm towel, water bottle, and glass of juice waiting for me, all of which looked nice glistening in the morning sunlight.

I ordered a fruit plate for my first course, then the eggs Benedict for my main. Both were tasty and nicely presented, though I was still full from the night before and couldn’t eat much.

Service and Amenities

I have consistently been impressed by the service onboard Thai Airways in premium cabins on both short and longhaul flights. This flight was no exception with phenomenal service from the moment I stepped onboard until disembarking in Sydney.

Upon arriving at my seat, I was offered a glass of Dom Perignon champagne, warm towel, chocolates, pajamas, slippers, amenity kit, noise cancelling headphones, and of course the menu for the flight.

After takeoff, the dinner service was spot on with quick service, mindfully set table, and nicely presented dishes.

After dinner, the crew offered to make the bed for me which included a thick mattress pad over the seat, duvet, and two pillows. Needless to say, I had a great sleep!

Wake-up and breakfast service was equally as enjoyable as dinner with the extremely attentive crew gladly taking care of anything I needed.

With about an hour to go before reaching Sydney, we were given landing cards to be filled out as well as an Express Path pass to access the priority lane for immigration in Australia.

Bottom Line

Thai Airways far exceeded my expectations on this flight and without a doubt offers one of the best first class products in the world. With the exceptional ground service at Bangkok Airport, an impressive lounge, and an onboard product that won’t disappoint even the most picky passenger, I can’t wait to fly with them again.
